Salt Lake City Cultural Plan

In 1997 our firm completed a plan for the expansion of arts institutions with commensurate transportation improvements for Salt Lake City. The plan proposes creation of four cultural campuses, linked by a way-finding system of landscape, lighting, streetscape amenities, light rail, and bicycle routes.

The four campuses include Fair Park, home to the State Fair; Gateway, a new area on the site of abandoned railway lines; Downtown, already home to the Salt Lake Art Center and the Salt Lake Convention Center; and Red Butte, a natural preserve in the foothills.

The Gateway campus will highlight two historic railway stations as part of a larger redevelopment plan.

At Fair Park there will be a science center, an aquarium tracing the underwater life of streams and waterways in Utah, and an environmental study center.

The Downtown campus will be more civic in nature, and it will include a new library, renovated theaters, and an expansion of the Salt Lake City Convention Center.

Finally, the campus at Red Butte will feature cultural and educational programs related to the site’s natural setting.
